These are the learning targets that guide lessons and activities for your child!

2nd Grade Targets 

Trimester 1

Literacy

  • Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.

  • Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. 

  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking by producing, expanding, and rearranging complete simple declarative, interrogative, imperative, and exclamatory sentences when speaking and writing. 

  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, and punctuation when writing.

  • Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English spelling when writing. 

  • Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges.

  • Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases using an array of strategies. 

  • I can read text with purpose and understanding. 

  • I can read text orally with accuracy. 

  • I can read text orally with appropriate rate.  

  • I can read text orally with expression. 

 

Writing

  • Write a narrative in which students recount an event or short sequence of events (beginning, middle and end). 

  • State an opinion.

  • Supply reasons that support the opinion.

 

Math

  • Demonstrate amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones. 

  • Count within 1000. 

  • Skip-count by 5s, 10s, and 100s.

  • Read and write numbers to 1000.

  • Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits. 

  • Fluently add within 12 using mental strategies.

  • Fluently subtract from 12 using mental strategies.

  • Measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools. 

  • Measures the length of an object twice using different length units; describe how the two measurements relate to the size of the unit chosen.

  • Estimate lengths using units of inches, feet, centimeters, and meters.

  • Measure to determine how much longer one object is than another.

  • Represent whole-numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally corresponding points to the numbers 0,1,2 . . . to represent whole-number sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram. 

  • Fluently add within 100 using different strategies.

  • Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text, as well as the focus of paragraphs.

  • Describe the connection between a series of historical events. 

  • Ue text features to locate key information in a text. 

  • Explain how specific images help me understand a text. 

  • Read text with purpose and understanding. 

  • Read text orally with accuracy. 

  • Read text orally with appropriate rate. 

  • Read text orally with expression. 

  • Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown words and phrases using an array of strategies. 

 

Writing

  • Use conventions of capitalization and punctuation when writing.  

  • Use conventions of spelling when writing. 

  • Introduce a topic in my info/explanatory writing. 

  • Use facts and definitions to develop points in my info/explanatory writing.  

  • Provide a concluding statement in my info/explanatory writing. 

  • Write a narrative that recounts an event or short sequence of events. 

  • Write a narrative that includes details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings.  

  • Use temporal words in my narrative writing.

Literacy

I can read a story out loud with expression and without making many mistakes.

I can decode words with common vowel teams, prefixes, and suffixes. 

I can ask and answer literal and inferential questions.

I can identify the main purpose of a text (author’s purpose)

I can compare and contrast two texts on the same topic

I can identify the main topic of a text, as well as the focus of paragraphs.

I can recount stories

Writing

I can write, expand, and rearrange complete sentences.

I can determine the meaning of unknown words and phrases using strategies. 

I can write with capital letters, ending punctuation, and my best 2nd grade spelling. 

I can write a narrative in which students recount an event or short sequence of events with a beginning, middle, end. 

I can use temporal words and include actions, thoughts, and feelings. 

I can provide a sense of closure in my narrative. 

I can state an opinion and supply reasons to support my opinion. 

I can use linking words in my writing and provide a sense of closure. 

 

Math

I can identify shapes and their attributes. 

I can partition circles and rectangles into equal shares.

I can measure the length of objects and show the measurements on a plot line. 

I can draw a picture graph/ bar graph to represent data. 

I can solve problems using information in a bar graph. 

I can add and subtract within 1,000

I can use addition to find the total number of object in rectangular arrays. 

I can solve two step word problems.
